MUN™ takes shape

We renewed the site to say what MUN is and what already works. Why it exists, the console and its Game Cards in design, MUN Shape, MUN OS to try today, the first game and a roadmap without dates.

We renewed this site so that it says what MUN™ is and what already works, without promising more than that.

Why it exists. Switching on a console used to mean stepping into a world you knew: the cartridge in your hand, the shelf full of games, the afternoon with friends. We feel that magic has been slipping away, and MUN is here to bring it back, with new games made for it. By the way: MUN comes from the moon, and sounds like it.

The console and its Game Cards are in design. The board is being evaluated and will have an official configuration, ARM64. The physical Game Cards are prototypes for now: a cartridge with a microSD card inside. On the site, the console and the card are illustrations, not photographs of a product.

MUN Shape works today. A Game Card dresses the console in its game's identity while it is in. On the home page you see it as you scroll: MUN OS's real screen changes with the "sea" sample, and the download carries a card to see it on your computer. All of it, on its page.

MUN OS can already be tried. It is the console's operating system, and today it runs on your computer as a virtual console, in QEMU. The current version is an experimental preview, v0.1.0-dev.4. Its page gathers its screens and shows how to start it.

The first game: Tower of Chaos. It is in development and only on MUN. What we show is a visual concept, not a screenshot of the game. More games will come, and we will present them when they are ready. All of it, on its page.

What comes next, in order and without dates:

  • Now · Operating system and hardware. Consolidate and develop MUN OS; evaluate the physical platform and begin integrating it; move the design of the console and the Game Cards forward.
  • Next · Games on hardware. Test the first games on the board; work on performance, controls, sound and storage; prepare an SDK, tools and documentation for studios, MUN Shape included.
  • Later · Consider a campaign. Show the results of the prototype and the tests; gauge the interest of players and studios; propose a campaign if there is interest and the project is ready.

These are working goals, not a promise of sale, production or delivery.

And this journal, with more room: each entry with its date, its reading time and the ones beside it. The earlier entries stay as they were: they are the story of how we got here.
